Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard is only expected to miss two or three weeks after suffering a thigh injury.
The 31-year-old sustained the knock during an England training session on Thursday, and reports had suggested he might be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
Lampard returned home from Qatar on Friday, where the Three Lions are preparing for a friendly against Brazil, and the Chelsea medical staff revealed the injury is not as bad as first feared.
England manager Fabio Capello said: "I think he will be out for two or three weeks. It is a little problem with his muscle."
Capello also rebuffed claims that the injury was the result of cramped conditions on the flight over to Qatar.
Reports have suggested that a number of players complained of muscle pain when they touched down in the Middle East, after the team used a plane only intended for short-haul flights.
Lampard, who suffered a similar injury to his left thigh at the start of the 2007/08 campaign, could miss a number of games for Chelsea, with the Blues travelling to Arsenal at the end of November for a crunch Premier League clash.
Capello added: "I don't understand the problem.
"It was the same plane we used to go to Trinidad last year and also Kazakhstan this year. We didn't have any injuries then and we won both matches.
"Frank came to me and said he had suffered this problem before, which was why he had stopped running.
"It was best to let him go home but, I think, in two or three weeks, he will be okay to play again."

Jackson Kids To Stay With His Mum - For Now
Michael Jackson's elderly mother, Katherine, has won temporary custody of the singer's three children
The children - Prince Michael, 12; Paris Michael, 11; and Prince Michael II, 7 - will now stay with the Jackson family until a further hearing on August 3.
It will take place at the Los Angeles Superior Court where Mrs Jackson filed guardianship papers.
She is reportedly also taking legal steps to gain control of her son's estate.
The Jacksons' lawyer said the family had not yet heard from Debbie Rowe, the mother of the two older children. The youngest was born to an unidentified surrogate mother.
The singer's father Joe Jackson added that looking after the children was the family's "first priority".
He was waving to everybody and telling them he loves them and all the fans at the gate. A few minutes after Michael was out there, he was dead.Joe Jackson
At a press conference later Mr Jackson said it was too soon to set a funeral date for the pop star.
He told reporters the family were waiting to hear details of a second, private post mortem examination.
"We don't have a time frame for that (the funeral) because I want to see how this autopsy is coming out," Mr Jackson said.
Jackson Found 'Emaciated And Bald'
Earlier it emerged he suspects "foul play" over his son's unexpected death at the age of 50.
He said he could not go into details about his concerns but told ABC7: "Michael was dead before he left the house. I'm suspecting foul play somewhere.

Dr Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson. Not ever.Lawyer Edward Chernoff
Los Angeles County Coroner's officials said their post-mortem found no indication of trauma or foul play.
But, because of additional tests, an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.
The lawyer representing Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murphy, said he did not administer the drugs which may have contributed to his death

Jedward 'Close To Signing Record Deal'
2:40pm UK, Friday November 13, 2009
X Factor twins John and Edward Grimes are close to signing a record deal and are already attracting "huge interest" within the music industry, according to show judge Louis Walsh.
Twin brothers John and Edward Grimes
The Irish teenagers only survived last weekend's elimination process because Simon Cowell opted to put them through to a public vote.
"Jedward will soon sign a record deal, there is huge interest in them and they'll be making pop records and having the time of their lives," Walsh told Sky News Online.
"As far as I'm concerned they have won already because they have proved Simon wrong. I'll be happy if we get one more week but they can keep going and going."
Tomorrow night's show will feature the music of rock legends Queen, but while Jedward had been tipped to sing Radio Ga Ga it is now understood that they may end up performing the hit single Under Pressure.
"I think it's totally appropriate given how they keep getting through against the odds," Walsh added.
"It's a pity that the people of Ireland can't vote because their support could really swing this for the two boys, I'm absolutely sure of it."
X Factor is regularly attracting peak audiences of 16 million each Saturday and Sunday night on ITV
The US Attorney General has promised to seek the death penalty against an alleged architect of the September 11 terror attacks and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Attorney General Eric Holder said that Mohammed, 44, will face a death penalty trial in federal court in New York for allegedly masterminding the 2001 attacks.
In addition to felling the twin towers, he claims to have personally beheaded US journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 with his "blessed right hand" and to have helped in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing that killed six people.
Mohammed is to stand trial along with the other 9/11 suspects who were being held in the US military prison in Cuba.
The five were being prosecuted at Guantanamo, but Barack Obama's administration has pledged to close it.

Incisive commentary on US politics from Jon-Christopher Bua
Mohammed, Waleed bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmad al Hawsawi and Ali Abd al Aziz Ali are accused of orchestrating the attacks that killed 2,973 people in 2001.
"I am confident in the ability of our courts to provide these defendants a fair trial, just as they have for over 200 years," Holder said.
"I am quite confident that the outcomes in these cases will be successful ones."
The transfer of legal action to the US homeland would go some way to meeting President Barack Obama's promise to shut down the legal twilight zone of Guantanamo Bay.
Human Rights Watch praised the decision as an "important step forward for justice."
Mohammed told interrogators he masterminded the deadly strikes, which involved hijackers crashing passenger planes in New York and Washington.
The suspect allegedly proposed the concept to Osama bin Laden as early as 1996.
A recent picture of Mohammed
He also obtained funding for the attacks from the al Qaeda leader, oversaw the operation and trained the hijackers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it is claimed.
Bringing such notorious suspects onto US soil is a key step in president's 'Gitmo' shutdown plan.
It is also a major legal and political test of Mr Obama's overall approach to terrorism and may spur criticism from those who never wanted the suspects in a civilian courtroom.
The New York trial could also force the court system to confront a host of difficult issues surrounding counter-terrorism programmes started after the 2001 attacks
